The Official Rogue Book Club

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28,  6 PM
AN OBJECT OF BEAUTY: A NOVEL BY STEVE MARTIN

FREE FOR EVERYONE WITH ADVANCED REGISTRATION
VIA ZOOM

THIS PROGRAM WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY 60 MINUTES

Each month, the Official Rogue Book Club brings together readers, art-lovers, and special guests to discuss books that inspire us to look at art and life in new and unexpected ways. We’re kicking of 2021 with “An Object of Beauty: A Novel by Steve Martin.”

Steven Marin, the comic turned successful film actor and now author has written several plays, including “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” and a highly acclaimed novel, "Shopgirl”. His work appears in The New Yorker and The New York Times.  Most of us remember him as a actor in film and television credits, including “Roxanne”, “Father of the Bride”, and “Saturday Night Live”. He has won Emmys for his television writing and two Grammys for comedy albums.

In “An Object of Beauty”, Lacey Yeager is young, captivating, and ambitious enough to take on the NYC art world. Groomed at Sotheby's and hungry to climb the social and career ladders put before her, Lacey charms men and women, old and young, rich and even richer with her magnetic charisma and liveliness. Her ascension to the highest tiers of the city parallel the soaring heights – and, at times, the dark lows – of the art world and the nation from the late 1990s through today.

HITTING A STRAIGHT LICK WITH A CROOKED STICK: STORIES FROM THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE BY ZORA NEALE HURSTON

FREE FOR EVERYONE WITH ADVANCED REGISTRATION
VIA ZOOM

THIS PROGRAM WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY 60 MINUTES

Each month, the Official Rogue Book Club brings together readers, art-lovers, and special guests to discuss books that inspire us to look at art and life in new and unexpected ways. To offer context to Betye Saar’s illustrations of short stories by Zora Neale Hurston, on view in “Legends from Los Angeles: Betye, Lezley, and Allison Saar”, and in recognition of Black History Month, the Rogue Book Club will delight in “Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick: Stories from the Harlem Renaissance", by Zora Neale Hurston.

“Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick” is an outstanding collection of stories about love and migration, gender and class, racism and sexism that proudly reflect African American folk culture. Brought together for the first time in one volume, the book includes eight of Hurston’s "lost" Harlem stories, which were found in forgotten periodicals and archives. These stories challenge conceptions of Hurston as an author of rural fiction and include gems that flash with her biting, satiric humor, as well as more serious tales reflective of the cultural currents of Hurston’s world. All are timeless classics that enrich our understanding and appreciation of this exceptional writer’s voice and her contributions to America’s literary traditions.
